Background Narrative

Kimberly Ilosvay is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education (2012-present) and teaches literacy and neuroeducation courses. Before she joined the faculty at the University of Portland, she held varying positions at Portland State University including doctoral student, graduate assistant, President of Kappa Delta PI, and adjunct faculty. Her career in education began as an early childhood and elementary school teacher and then she served as a reading specialist in the Reynolds School District and Portland Public School District. She has also worked in various capacities at the middle school and high school level. Dr. Ilosvay completed her doctoral work in curriculum and instruction with a focus on cultural and linguistic diversity at Portland State University. Her master’s degree in Education is from Portland State University and her undergraduate degree is in Architecture from the University of Texas. Dr. Ilosvay’s research focuses on language acquisition and instruction as well as multicultural education in countries such as the U.S., India, Spain, Ireland, Turkey, and Tanzania. The role of cross-cultural relationships, value systems, and behavior has become an important part of this research. Dr. Ilosvay is interested in literacy and language, international education, and neuroeducation. With diversity ever present in the world, she feels these three areas complement each other. Literacy skills allow one to fully participate in the world around them. The process of acquiring language, native and others, is influenced by the individual and their culture. Each individual uses different pathways for language. It is important to have many methods and techniques to assess and instruct effectively to the diversity present in school systems today.
