Mock’s Crest Productions presents “The Pirates of Penzance,” June 9-25 at the University of Portland

June 5, 2017

Mock’s Crest Productions will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved operetta of mistaken identity, “The Pirates of Penzance,” in the Mago Hunt Center Theater at the University of Portland (9000 N. Willamette Blvd., Portland) on June 9-11, 15-18, and 22-25.

Set sail with one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operettas. This delightful tale follows young Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year is released from his apprenticeship with a band of pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley (“the very model of a modern Major-General”), and they fall instantly in love.

Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday once each leap year. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his “twenty-first birthday.” This means he must serve another 63 years, during which Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.  A favorite of audiences since its premiere in 1879, “The Pirates of Penzance (or The Slave of Duty)” is a lighthearted farce sure to appeal to all ages.

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday – Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets for the performances are $32 for adults; $27 for seniors and students. Dinner or brunch, purchased separately, will be served on the lawn in front of the Hunt Center prior to show times. Tickets are available at the Mago Hunt Box Office and can be purchased by calling (503) 943-7287 (10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday) or by email at magohuntboxoffice@up.edu.
