Apply for Housing: Current Student

Any student currently attending classes at the University of Portland, who wants to live on campus next year, must apply online by the deadline.

The current student online application due date is February 15, 2017.

Please note: Students are no longer required to pay an application deposit to apply for on-campus housing. When selecting housing, you are entering into a Residence Hall & Food Service Contract and are committing to live on campus for the entire 2017-18 academic year (unless signing up for a single semester due to study abroad). If you make a request to cancel your housing contract, this may be subject to review and require supporting documentation showing that there was a significant change in your financial, medical, or academic situation since agreeing to the housing contract. Students who are approved to cancel a housing contract will be charged a $100 cancellation fee.

How do I apply?

On or after December 1, visit this page to find the "Apply for Housing" link that takes you to eRezLife to access the 2017-18 application.

Can I cancel my application and/or housing contract?

You may cancel your application before the deadline. A signed contract is legally binding and can only be canceled via the petition process.

Do I tell you who my roommate or housemates are going to be?

You do not identify a roommate or housemate on the application, but will attend selection with your room or housemates. You will all pick the room, apartment, or house at the same time when the person in your group with the best lottery number is called.

What if I don't know who I want to live with?

If you are looking to live in a traditional residence hall, you can either attend selection with a roommate or by yourself. If you want to live in Haggerty or Tyson Hall or in a UP-owned rental house, you do not need to specify your roommates when you apply but will need to get a group together before selection day, as we ask that an entire unit be filled at once. Two resources you can use to find roommates are the forum on the Current Student portal and the UP Facebook Housing group.

What if I can't be there to select my room?

You should designate a proxy on your application, or send a signed permission note with them to selections. A proxy acts in your place, and their actions in selecting housing and agreeing to a contract are considered the same as yours in this case.

Is there a way I can get answers to all my questions about the housing process?

Yes, all students on and off campus are encouraged to attend an information meeting in one of the residence halls the week of January 22, 2017. Any student may attend any meeting. You may also post questions to our Facebook page.

Can I stay in the same room I'm currently in?

"Squatting," or renewing a contract for the next academic year, is not an option in the residence halls. Tenants of UP-owned rental houses may be allowed to retain their house for next year if 51% or more of the current residents plan to return. Contact Physical Plant for further details.

How do I select housing?

If you are a rising junior or senior seeking to live in Haggerty & Tyson or a UP Rental House, you will attend selection night in the Bauccio Commons on February 28, 2017, 6 to 8 p.m. Each person in the group you plan to live with must attend or designate a proxy to attend. Prior to selection each person in your group will be sent a lottery number. The name of the person in your group with the best lottery number will be called, and your group can come forward to select housing.

If you are seeking to live in a traditional residence hall, look out for information about that particular hall's selection date and time, which will take place March 3, 4, or 5. You will attend selection at the hall or designate a proxy to go in your place. Residents returning to their hall will check in and indicate whether they are planning to room with other returning resident(s) or pull in students from other halls or off campus. If you are trying to move to another hall without being pulled in by a current resident, you will check in and be asked to wait until all returning residents have selected housing.

If you wish, you may attend one hall's selection and, if you are unable to secure housing in that hall, attend a different hall's selection. However, you may not select housing "tentatively" or ask hall staff to "hold" a room for you. Once you select housing in a hall, you will agree to a contract committing to live there for the next year.

When do I get to select housing?

When you select housing during a particular selection event is based largely on your lottery number or the lottery number(s) of the person(s) you are seeking to live with. All applicants within a hall are sorted into cohorts by projected class year for the fall 2017 semester and the number of semesters they've lived on campus (e.g., rising seniors with 5-6+ semesters on campus, rising seniors with 3-4 semesters, rising juniors with 3-4+ semesters). Within these cohorts, lottery numbers are generated randomly. For example, if there are three rising seniors who have each lived on campus for 6 semesters, lottery numbers #1-3 will be randomly assigned to these three students. The next cohort's lottery numbers will begin with #4.

When you check in for selection at a traditional residence hall, you will be sorted within projected class year into those pairs or groups where all students are returning to the hall community and those pairs or groups where one or more students are being pulled in from another hall community. Rising seniors staying will be the first group to select (in order by lottery number); rising seniors pulling someone in will be the second group; rising juniors staying will be the third group; and so on. The last group to select, if there are spaces remaining, will be those wishing to move into a community without anyone pulling them in.

Lottery numbers are sent to all applicants via UP e-mail prior to selections.

Can I have a roommate from outside my community?

Yes. Students wishing to pull a roommate into their community will select after those in their class year who are not pulling someone in from outside the community.

Can I select housing in a new community without being pulled in?

Yes, but you will select after all those returning to that community and only if there are spaces remaining. You will select according to the class year system of rising seniors selecting first, then rising juniors, etc.

How many apartments of each size are there in Haggerty/Tyson?

In Haggerty, there are ten 7-person apartments, two 6-person apartments, and four 4-person apartments. In Tyson, there is one 18-person apartment, two 12-person apartments, eight 7-person apartments, two 6-person apartments, and seven 4-person apartments. If you are not participating in pre-placement, check in with the Office of Residence Life after pre-placement is complete to find out how many apartments of each size will be available during general upperclassman selection.

Which UP-owned houses are available for selection?

Once Physical Plant has confirmed who will be returning to their rental houses the following year, a list of the remaining houses will be posted on the UP Rental Houses page.

What happens if I can't get into upperclassman housing?

Haggerty/Tyson and UP rental house selections are held before traditional residence hall selections. The application gives you the choice to return to the traditional residence hall process if you do not get into upperclassman housing, or to cancel your application.

What is the likelihood that I will get into the hall/house/type of room I want?

Unfortunately, we cannot predict supply vs. demand. Selections depend upon how many students decide to return to university housing. Your likelihood of selecting the specific housing you prefer will depend on how many students in the class year(s) above you opt to return to on-campus housing, and the random assignment of your lottery number.

How do the suite rooms in Fields/Schoenfeldt work?

The suites may be selected by no fewer than 4 students. If a quad grouping would like their friends to be able to select the adjoining room (with which they share a bathroom), a courtesy hold may be placed on that room for the other students, at the discretion of the hall director. The hold will stand unless all other suites have been selected and a group with a better lottery number than those it is being held for wants it.

How do I get an apartment or house with my friends?

Your group will check in at the upperclassman housing selection night; you must have at least three people in your group for a rental house and at least four people for an apartment. All members of your group, or their proxy, must be present at selection. Your group will select when the person in your group with the best lottery number is called.

The remaining number of houses and apartments at each occupancy level will be posted and updated throughout the selection night. If you are in the waiting area and see that all options with the occupancy of your group size have been taken, you may elect to change your group size before entering the selection area; for example, you might join with another group in the waiting area or someone in your group may choose to drop out at that time.

Each Haggerty/Tyson apartment has at least one double bedroom. Your group should know who will be roommates in a double room and who will be taking a single room.

Can I select housing for one semester only?

Students who are graduating at the end of fall semester or studying abroad spring semester may sign a fall-only contract.

Students who will be studying abroad fall semester will need to either pair up with a spring study abroad student to create full-year occupancy, or wait until selections end to see if any spring-only spaces are available where a fall-only student without a spring partner has selected housing. Spring-only students may also forego this process and apply for spring-only housing using the Mid-Year Housing Application after the upcoming fall semester begins. The spring 2017 application deadline is November 20, 2016. We strongly suggest that if you do not have a fall-only partner to select with, you wait to complete the Mid-Year Housing Application, as there will be many more spring spaces available then.

What do I do if I missed the application deadline?

Contact the Office of Residence Life to be placed on the waitlist for any spaces remaining after selection is complete.
