First Generation College Students

Welcome and congratulations on being the first in your family to pursue a college degree! First generation students have a lot to be proud of. Acquiring your bachelor’s degree will provide you with many opportunities for your future. Your dedication, perseverance, resourcefulness, and hard work have helped you make it thus far and will continue to serve you well during your time at the University of Portland and beyond!

Who Are First Generation College Students?

First Generation (FGEN) students are defined by the University of Portland as those who are members of the first generation within their family to attend any type of college. At UP, 10 percent of the student population comes from a family with no college background.
